What is Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism)?

Sanātana means "eternal, without beginning or end." Dharma is harder to translate. It means the natural order that holds the world together, and also the right way for a person to live within it: doing your duty, being truthful, and not causing harm. So Sanatan Dharma means "the eternal way of living rightly." It is the traditional name for what the world today calls Hinduism.

Unlike many religions, it has no single founder, no single holy book, and no single head. It grew over thousands of years through the insights of sages called rishis, and it welcomes many paths to the same truth. You can worship God with form, without form, through knowledge, through action, or through love, and all of these are accepted.

This guide follows the traditional view where it explains beliefs, and gives the dates historians use where it talks about history. Different schools (Vedanta, Arya Samaj, Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta and others) interpret many verses differently. The translations here follow the commonly accepted meaning.

Shruti and Smriti: what was heard, what was remembered

All Hindu scriptures fall into two families. Shruti ("that which is heard") is revealed knowledge that the rishis are believed to have heard in deep meditation. It is the highest authority. Smriti ("that which is remembered") was written by human authors to explain and apply Shruti through law, story and poetry.

When were they composed?

Tradition holds that the Vedas are apaurusheya, not made by any human, and eternal. Historians date the written-down forms roughly as below. Bars are drawn to scale; the dates are approximate and debated.

Indigo = Shruti, gold = Smriti. The dotted row shows what was happening elsewhere at the same time.नीला = श्रुति, सुनहरा = स्मृति। बिन्दु वाली पंक्ति दिखाती है कि उसी समय दुनिया में और क्या हो रहा था।

The root of everything

The Four Vedas

Veda comes from the Sanskrit root vid, "to know." The Vedas are the oldest texts of India and among the oldest in the world. For more than three thousand years they were passed down by memory, from teacher to student, with special recitation methods that kept every syllable and tone exact. UNESCO recognised this Vedic chanting tradition as an intangible heritage of humanity in 2008.

This is a prayer for a clear, good mind, not for money or things. Just as the sun lights up the world, we ask the divine light to light up our thinking so we make good choices. The opening words "Om bhur bhuvah svah" were added later in tradition and are not part of the Rigveda verse itself.

In simple words

The oldest Veda opens with fire. Fire was the link between people and the divine: whatever is offered into it is carried upward. Fire also stands for energy, effort and the light of knowledge, which is why we still light a diya or a havan at every important moment.

In simple words

The many gods are many faces of one divine reality, like one person being called "father," "son," and "teacher" by different people. This single line is the root of Hindu tolerance: if truth is one and names are many, there is no need to fight over names.

Three thousand years ago, a rishi asked the same question scientists ask today: what was there before the universe? Instead of giving a fixed answer, he ends with honest wonder. The Vedas encourage asking questions, not just believing.

O Agni, come to the feast, praised, to carry our offerings. Sit down as our priest on the sacred grass.

In simple words

This shows how the Samaveda works: it takes a Rigveda verse and turns it into a song. The same words, sung with melody, become a different kind of prayer, one you feel as much as understand.

The Bhumi Sukta has 63 verses of love for the earth: its rivers, mountains, plants and all its peoples. If the earth is our mother, we should not harm her. It is one of the earliest environmental prayers in the world. That is also why many Hindus touch the ground before stepping out of bed in the morning.

The Upanishads

Upa-ni-shad means "to sit down near," the way a student sat close to a teacher to hear deep truths. Over 200 Upanishads are known; tradition lists 108, and about 11 are considered principal: Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka and Shvetashvatara. Their big question is: Who am I really, and what is the reality behind everything?

The four Great Sayings (Mahavakyas)

One short sentence from an Upanishad of each Veda sums up the whole teaching: your innermost Self (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman) are the same.

prajñānaṃ brahma · Aitareya Up., Rigvedaऐतरेय उप., ऋग्वेद

"Consciousness is Brahman." The awareness by which you know anything is itself the divine."

ahaṃ brahmāsmi · Brihadaranyaka Up., Yajurvedaबृहदारण्यक उप., यजुर्वेद

"I am Brahman." Not the body or ego, but the true Self within."

tat tvam asi · Chandogya Up., Samavedaछान्दोग्य उप., सामवेद

"This Self is Brahman." The same truth, said once more."

The big ideas

Core ideas, explained simply

Dharma

Right action, duty and the natural order. A river's dharma is to flow, fire's is to burn, and a person's is to do their duties honestly and kindly. Dharma changes with your role: a parent, a student and a doctor each have their own.

Karma

Every action has a result, like a seed that grows into a plant. Good actions bring good results, harmful ones bring suffering, in this life or a later one. Karma is not fate: your choices today shape your tomorrow.

Atman

Your true Self: not the body, not the mind, but the pure awareness inside that never dies. The body is like clothing the soul wears.

Brahman

The one infinite reality behind all things. When given form and worshipped with love, the same reality is called Ishvara or Bhagavan: Vishnu, Shiva, Devi and others.

Samsara

The soul passes through many births. Its karma decides the next life, much as today's actions decide tomorrow's circumstances.

Moksha

Freedom from the cycle of birth and death: knowing your true Self and resting in lasting peace and joy. It is the final goal of life.

Rta

The cosmic order the Rigveda speaks of: the sun rises, seasons turn, rivers flow. Living by dharma means living in tune with that order.

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

"The whole world is one family" (Maha Upanishad). Small minds divide people into "mine" and "theirs"; generous hearts see everyone as family.

Actions create results and habits, which shape the next birth. Knowledge of the true Self breaks the cycle: that is moksha.

Four goals of life (Purusharthas)

Sanatan Dharma does not ask everyone to renounce the world. It accepts four healthy goals: Dharma (living rightly), Artha (earning wealth honestly), Kama (enjoying love, art and pleasure), and Moksha (spiritual freedom). Wealth and pleasure are good, as long as they are pursued within dharma.

The 18 Mahapuranas18 महापुराण

Some lists give the Vayu Purana in place of the Shiva Purana. There are also 18 secondary Upapuranas.

The ten avatars of Vishnu (Dashavatara)

Many people notice that the order reads like a story of life developing: from a fish in water, to an amphibian, to a land animal, to half-human, to a small human, and on to full human beings.

Daily practice, life rituals and festivals

Daily practice

Waking early, bathing, a few minutes of prayer or sandhya, lighting a lamp, chanting a mantra like the Gayatri, yoga and meditation, respecting elders, and offering food to God before eating.

The five daily duties

Every householder owes something each day to five: to the sages (by studying), to the gods (by worship), to ancestors (by remembering them), to other people (by feeding guests), and to animals and nature.

The 16 samskaras

Sacred ceremonies that mark each stage of life, from before birth to after death. Well-known ones: namakarana (naming), annaprashana (first solid food), mundan (first haircut), upanayana (sacred thread, start of study), vivaha (marriage) and antyeshti (last rites).

Seva and daan

Serving others and giving to those in need are forms of worship. The Gita says the best gift is given at the right time, to the right person, expecting nothing back (17.20).

Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar (panchang), so their Gregorian dates change every year.
